Systems Matter
With Hazel Smirlis, Director of Compliance Lab
Establishing the framework needed for an effective yet simplified safety system, requires critical knowledge to ensure a successful implementation into ‘the way’ a business operates. An important process to assist in streamlining the policies, procedures and plans in all things safety - Hazel Smirlis takes us through her career trajectory and what led her to start Compliance Lab.
I have spent over a decade developing and implementing systems for businesses. Funny how life works because as a child I was always very tidy, organised, orderly and had impeccable attention to detail - these have always beenmy natural gifts.
My career path may have been a little different to those in the management systems consulting industry. I started my career working in a quality assurance laboratory, testing products for PZ Cussons. I found working in a laboratory even after studying and completing an applied science degree, was not for me.
I moved on and worked in Quality Assurance - initially working in the automotive industry for a Japanese company where I was immersed inquality management systems focused on quality and product innovation. I than worked for McKenzie Group Consulting as their Management Systems Consultant – it was here that I found the turning point in my career.
This is where I learnt the essence and foundation of the ISO management systems and its impacts on businesses. From manufacturing to construction sectors, I loved developing my craft in these different industries, really immersing myself into the businesses and helping them implement the true benefits of ISO management systems in their business. This is where I found my place and passion for systems consulting.
In 2017, I decided to take another giant leap and started my business - Compliance Lab. The brand name 'Compliance' standsfor what we do and 'Lab' is the science of what we do. I love that the initial part of my career in science and working in a laboratory is part of the business name.
Compliance Lab has grown and now have a team force of three. We are truly passionate about what we do and the impact we have. We are fascinated in creating structures and systems that help businesses perform effectively. We want our clients to feel safe, secure and know that their business is structured in a way that will not only give them an edge in their industry but also help them secure future tenders. We can see the impact systems have, on businesses day-in, day-out. These impacts include improved productivity; company culture; consistency; increased tender acceptance; reduced costs, and customer feedback. We help clients obtain ISO management system certification in the areas of quality, safety and environment. We assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of these systems in their business.
Our portfolio is made up of a significant number of clients within the construction industry. Most focus on safety for their workforce–a safety management system to ensure accountability for the prevention of work-related injury and ill health, as well as the provision of a safe and healthy workplace and activities.
I have learnt so much over the years and have truly loved every bit of my journey. In particular, I value the relationships and connections I have formed with our clients and community. I truly believe that the success of Compliance Lab is due to the team - as a whole. As a team we are all individually so different, yet we all work so well, together.
If you are passionate about safety, follow your passion. Believe that you can, and you will achieve.
