The Future Project Manager
Hello! My name is Amelia Bowen.
I have always been very ambitious, hard-working, and career-driven. I have also believed that, if I put my mind to something and work hard, I know I can achieve my goals. Career success was ingrained in me from a young age as both of my parents have been very successful in their careers. My parents taught me that if you want something you need to work hard and earn it, no one is going to give you anything on a silver platter.
Growing up, my dad built both of our houses we lived in, so I was introduced to construction at a young age. I have always found construction extremely fascinating. Construction is somewhat like solving a puzzle in that designers and builders are constantly thinking of innovative ideas and ways to solve problems. This element of the construction process I absolutely love and really enjoy being involved with. These experiences and elements of my character were the basis for my passion and there began my love for Construction and Project Management.
My goal is to become a Project Manager. I want to be at the forefront of project delivery and lead a team of people to deliver exceptional projects. I aim to develop my industry knowledge and level of professionalism. I strive to make a substantial contribution to the success of all projects I am involved with and be a highly productive and valued employee for the construction company I work for. I aim to continue the development of my team member skills so that I can undertake my duties to the best level of my ability and professionalism. I would also like to begin learning leadership skills and abilities that will enable me to be an effective leader in this industry during future times of my career.
Passion is what keeps me going and motivated when I have to stay back late in the office to finish off a task that needs to be done that day or when I’m at a concrete pour at 7am on a cold rainy morning. Passion is what drives me and it is really your greatest supporter when it comes down to career success.
One of the things I love about my role is that I’m site-based assisting with project delivery.
No two days are the same, some days I am putting together tender packages, and other days I’m meeting with the client and architect to review and sign off samples. It’s rewarding to get to the end of each day and see the progression that has been made and to be able to be on the frontline amongst all the action.
I’m very passionate about Construction and Project Management and the industry is very rewarding to be part of. The most exciting element of working in construction is the creation of a new structure and being involved in the development process from the design phase and plans, to completion and handover. Being able to see a project come to fruition is extremely satisfying and there is a high level of job satisfaction when you can see the completed structure. I decided on a career in construction because I love the fact that every day is different and I am constantly working on a range of projects that are challenging and interesting. It’s rewarding to leave behind a building that will be used and admired by the public and provide a productive and usable space for the owner. I love that construction is always changing and evolving. More than any other industry, our decisions, innovation, and ideas have a direct impact on our environment and desire for a more sustainable and healthier world.
I have always been very interested in personal development and growth. So, I decided that I wanted to work with a supportive mentor who would assist in my professional growth, and challenge me to move beyond my comfort zone and current level of knowledge and ability. A mentoring opportunity came up with Elinor Moshe, so I decided to take the leap of faith. I thought to myself ‘I’ve got absolutely nothing to lose but so much to gain’. Being mentored is one of the best things I’ve done for my career and my own future personal development. Mentoring is very important, especially for a Graduate. A mentor will provide you with professional guidance relevant to your industry. A mentor will also empower you, engage with your learning and enable you to focus on your goals. A mentor will help you to realise what development and objectives you are capable of achieving regardless of the challenges you foresee. A mentor is a valuable role model and a person that you admire and looks up to because of their achievements, experience, and knowledge in the industry you are passionate about.
Fast-forward to 6 months, and I have grown professionally and personally. To name a few, I’ve learned that a positive, productive, and hardworking mindset is crucial. I have worked through my limiting beliefs, developed positive daily habits, pushed my boundaries, and become more confident in myself. This professional learning and self-development have provided me with a decisive and strong foundation on which I can build my career in the construction industry.
The working hours in the construction industry can be very demanding, so I am learning to create a healthy work-life balance. Every night after I get home from work, I make sure I go to the gym. It’s my scheduled hour of ‘ME time’ where I switch off my emails, focus on myself, and workout. I also make sure I get enough sleep every night and ensure I take the time to recharge on weekends, which is really important.
Teamwork is crucial. I work in a strong team of committed professionals who share my passion for construction. A team that has a shared purpose where members feel valued and supported is a foundation to achieving success in this industry.
I have appreciated the support of my workplace mentors who have been patient and supportive as I have commenced my career.
